How to send Whatsapp Icebreakers (+ Best Practices)
❔What’s an icebreaker ?
It’s how we decided to name our Whatsapp campaigns 😊
An Icebreaker is similar to an email newsletter: it's a message sent to your entire base or a segment of your WhatsApp subscribers.
All messages are sent at the same time.
⚡ How to Send an Icebreaker with CoCo?
1️⃣ Click on "Icebreakers" in the left menu (red arrow)
You will arrive on this dashboard that lists all your past or future Icebreakers along with their statistics.
2️⃣ Click on “Create Icebreaker” on the right (blue arrow)
3️⃣ Edit your Icebreaker
→ Language / Targets:
You can select the language of your Icebreaker using the "select language" option (red arrow).
If you have subscribers from different countries in your database (for example, France, UK, Spain), selecting a language will segment your Icebreaker.
For example, if you select "Spain", it will only send the Icebreaker to people in your database with a Spanish number.
→ The “product to push” (optional):
You can select a specific product to send via the "product to push" option. It will automatically take the product photo from Shopify.
If you want to create a more general Icebreaker, you simply leave it blank and upload your own visual/photo in the "Upload a file" section.
4️⃣ Choose the text for your Icebreaker and set up the link.
→ Choose your text, a few top practices ⭐:
- Avoid making it too long; this isn’t an email.
- Add emojis, but not too many.
- The call to action/offer should be clear and simple.
- Personalize as much as possible; here are some ideas:
- add a {name} to include the first name (❗only if you have first names in your database)
- sign the message in the name of the founder
- say “hello”
- Speak in the tone of your brand
- Avoid sending Icebreakers late at night
→ Be sure to include a link in the text, like this:

→ The FOOTER message is mandatory (GDPR compliant), and so is the STOP button.
5️⃣ Finalize the sending of your Icebreaker
→ Audience Size:
You can see the size of the audience that will receive the Icebreaker (red arrow).
If you want to send an Icebreaker only to people who have interacted with the chatbot within the last 24 hours (free, as it is within the 24-hour window), you can check “Target only open conversations”.
→ The Cost:
You can see the cost associated with the Icebreaker (red arrow).
→ The Date:
You can choose the date to send the Icebreaker. Meta may take up to 48 hours to approve your message (in 99% of cases, it only takes a few minutes).
We still recommend doing it several hours in advance and making sure it does not appear as “rejected” as shown below:

💳 How much does it cost to send an Icebreaker ?
→ The cost of sending an Icebreaker depends on the country of your subscribers
→ You can find all the conversation costs by country here: https://my-coco.ai/fees-additional-plan/
→ The conversation category is "Marketing."
→ If you are in France and under the PRO plan, the cost is €0.18976 for a 24-hour conversation during which there is no limit on exchanges.
→ If you are in a custom plan, you can check your rates in your “billing” section → custom plan → click on “rates” :
→ You can send text, links, and photos, and it does not increase the cost.
→ You will be able to see the estimated cost of sending at the bottom during the setup of your Icebreaker (red arrow):
⏰ What is the best time to send an Icebreaker?
Frequency:
→ There are no strict rules, but it is best to have a good reason to send one (new product launch, restock, sales, major announcement, etc.)
→ Regarding frequency, once a month on average seems to be a good strategy. It all depends on your usual practices and what you communicate to the customer. If, when signing up for your WhatsApp base, the customer is informed that they will receive one message per week and they agree, then it’s OK.
Timing:
→ Test different times, but late at night (after 8 PM) / overnight is a period to avoid.
⛔ Are there limits to sending Icebreakers?
→ If your WhatsApp API account is new:
- Unverified BM: 250 conversations per day
- Verified BM: 1000 conversations per day (before gradually increasing to 10,000 then 100,000)
